Read 2 Samuel 5:17-25 Inquiring of the Lord

In this particular passage of scripture we find David battling the Philistines. Twice. And both times, we find David (the man of war) inquiring of the Lord before entering the battle (vs 19, 23). David completely understood that his success relied totally on fighting the battle God’s way. In each case, God gave David a specific battle plan. The first time David was to ‘go up’ but the second time, David had to circle around them…wait…and then listen for ‘the sound’. Both times, David obeyed the command of the Lord and was victorious against the enemy. Today, you may find yourself having to battle ‘the same enemy’ and maybe you’re thinking you should fight the same way you fought the first time. After all, it worked then. But, never get so familiar with your enemy or so comfortable with your past victory that you presume to know the way. We must ALWAYS inquire of the Lord for His battle plan.

The first time, David simply had to rise up. The second time however, he had to ‘wait and listen’. In other words, David had to be close enough to the trees to ‘hear’ the sound and also to be able to discern the sound of the march above any other sound.

You and I have to be in a place of being able to hear and discern that it is the Lord Himself giving the command. We have to be close enough to discern the sound of His voice above every other.

There is only one way to achieve that closeness…and that is through our willingness to spend time with the Lord and to know Him personally, to learn His way and His voice, to obey that which He shows us to do, so that when the day of the “battle” comes, we are able to discern the direction and the sound of the Lord`s marching and the place of His presence.

We are not called to fight every battle that comes our way. Warring for things that are not assigned to us will cause us to enter a fight without the help of the Lord. We have to learn to choose our battles wisely because some things are simply sent as a distraction in order to delay you and knock you off of God’s timing.

As we wrap up this first week of our 21 day prayer/fast, set your heart and mind to seek Him. Seek His ways. Seek His plan. Seek His strategy and seek His Timing. And whatever you do, always inquire of the Lord. Seek counsel from the Lord before entering into a battle. If He says no, then don’t go. And when He does say go, pay heed to His instruction and know that He will go before you and ensure your victory!
